Birkbeck is a leading London university specialising in evening study. Its website promotes higher education courses to prospective students in the UK and internationally.
The Challenge
Improve the visual consistency, accessibility and usability of key Birkbeck website journeys within the limitations of the existing CMS. Following the UX review, the challenge was to translate the research and UX recommendations into practical UI improvements without requiring a full visual redesign.
My Approach
01 | Establish
Defined visual improvements based on the UX findings, accessibility requirements and CMS constraints. I reviewed typography, colour, spacing, components and layouts to establish a consistent UI direction.
02 | Design
Redesigned key journey pages using the existing platform and components, focusing on visual hierarchy, readability, accessibility, consistency and clearer calls to action.
03 | Style Guide
Created reusable UI guidance covering global design principles, accessibility considerations and page-level recommendations to support consistent implementation across the website.
04 | Handover
Documented the designs and recommendations so the website team could implement improvements incrementally within the existing CMS.
Outcome
The project provided Birkbeck with a practical UI direction for improving key user journey pages without requiring a full website redesign. Alongside the redesigned pages, I delivered a reusable design guide covering global UI guidelines and step-by-step recommendations. This gave the website team a framework for making consistent visual and usability improvements across the CMS.
